Switching Between Endorsing Bodies Within the Global Talent Route
Co-author: Nelli Tesis
The UK Global Talent Visa allows highly skilled individuals to work in the UK in fields such as digital technology, academia, research, and arts and culture. While applicants normally remain within the same endorsed field, it is sometimes asked whether a person who already holds Global Talent permission under one route can switch to the other.
The short answer is that a new endorsement may be possible, but there are important immigration rules that affect how such a change would operate in practice.
Obtaining a New Endorsement
There is generally no prohibition on applying for endorsement from a different endorsing body. For example, a person currently endorsed under the Digital Technology pathway could apply for endorsement from the Royal Academy of Engineering if they meet the relevant criteria.
However, endorsement bodies typically expect the applicant’s achievements to align with the field in which they are applying. As a result, switching endorsing bodies is relatively uncommon because the original endorsement will usually reflect the field in which the applicant demonstrated exceptional talent or exceptional promise.
Immigration Permission: The 12-Month Rule
Even if a new endorsement is obtained, the immigration rules impose an important limitation.
Under Rule GT 4.1ZA, where a person has held Global Talent permission within the previous 12 months, a new application would normally be treated as an extension of the existing Global Talent visa, rather than a completely new grant of permission linked to the new endorsement.
In practical terms, this means:
- The individual would remain on the same Global Talent immigration permission,
- The visa would effectively be treated as a continuation of the existing status,
- The new endorsement would not necessarily result in a new type of Global Talent leave.
In other words, to obtain immigration permission fully linked to a new endorsement, a person would generally need to have a break of at least 12 months since holding Global Talent permission.
Example Scenario
A common scenario arises where an individual endorsed under the Digital Technology (Promise) route wishes to switch to the Academic/Research (Science – Promise) route, for example due to perceived advantages in settlement timelines, as applicants under the Academic/Research Global Talent route may be eligible for settlement after 3 years, whereas those endorsed under the Digital Technology (Promise) route are on a 5-year route to settlement.
In such cases:
- Obtaining a new endorsement under the Science (Promise) route may be possible, provided the applicant meets the relevant criteria.
- However, if the individual has held Global Talent permission within the previous 12 months, any subsequent visa application will be treated as an extension of their existing leave, rather than a new grant linked to the new endorsing body.
