UKRAINE SCHEMES – UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSFUL OUTCOMES

    14.08.2025

Ukraine Scheme applications are often considered straightforward. However, in practice, many applicants face unexpected and complex challenges that require careful legal handling. Recently, Daria Kotkova, supervised by immigration advisor Tetiana Deren, successfully secured positive decisions in several complicated Ukraine Scheme cases.

In one matter, the applicant, due to distress and mental health difficulties, left the UK shortly before her visa expired. Upon returning from Ukraine, she was placed on immigration bail at the UK border, and her passport was retained. Daria Kotkova submitted an extension application immediately, providing a detailed explanation of the circumstances that caused the late application. She continued to support the client with letters and representations to the Immigration Officer, which led to the return of the passport even before the positive decision was issued. The client’s stay was successfully extended.

In another case, the applicant had originally been granted leave under the Ukraine Scheme but, at the time of applying for an extension, the client was not living in the UK continuously, had no permanent address, and was not employed. She had been forced to return to Ukraine to care for her seriously ill father. Despite her absence from the UK, Daria successfully secured an 18-month extension, providing a clear and well-documented explanation of her exceptional circumstances.

A further matter involved two brothers with previous immigration breaches and a history of false information being declared in an earlier application, caused by misadvice from a travel agent. Daria explained their situation in detail, provided relevant supporting evidence, and emphasised that the incorrect information had been given without malicious intent. Both applications were granted.

These cases demonstrate that even in routes perceived as straightforward, such as the Ukraine Scheme, complex personal circumstances can put applications at risk. At Sterling Law, we treat each matter individually, carefully analysing the facts, preparing strong representations, and ensuring every client receives a tailored and thorough approach.

If you are facing difficulties with your Ukraine Scheme application or extension, our team can guide you through the process.
