Securing Safety: From Fleeing Conflict to Humanitarian Protection in the UK

Co-author: Mykola Koval
Our client, a national of Ukraine, entered the UK in September 2023, after fleeing the war. Due to the lack of direct flights from Ukraine, he travelled by bus to other safety country (Poland), to London, UK, where he has remained ever since.
Personal Circumstances
The applicant is a young man of conscription age who sustained a conflict‑related injury that still requires medical treatment. He has a well‑founded fear of persecution for three interconnected reasons:
- the ongoing Russian invasion in Ukraine;
- the high probability of being forcibly conscripted into the armed forces;
- the serious threat to his life and health if returned while still recovering from his injury.
Key Procedural Milestones
Timeline:
- 20/01/2025 – Asylum Screening interview
- 04/02/2025 – submitted PIQ and SOAGs120
- 07/04/2025 – Asylum Substantive interview
- 10/04/2025 – Humanitarian Protection granted
Outcome
Thanks to diligent evidence‑gathering, timely filings, and careful interview preparation, our client now enjoys legal status, the right to work and study, and full access to NHS healthcare. Over the next five years he can integrate, continue treatment, and—if conditions in Ukraine remain unsafe—apply for settlement.
