    Success Story: Holding Employers Accountable and Standing Up to bullying in the Workplace

    27.05.2025

    Co-author: Sofiya Rogers.

    At Sterling Law, we recently had the privilege of supporting a senior employee from one of the world’s top 10 investment company- an accomplished professional with over 15 years of experience in the financial sector. Despite their tenure, reputation, and proven track record, our client faced a hostile work environment marked by discriminatory behaviour and unfair treatment at the hands of their manager.

    What began as an unfair performance review quickly exposed deeper systemic issues: biased appraisals, exclusion from key projects, and bullying. No employee, regardless of their level or industry, should have to endure this behaviour at their workplace.

    Our Response

    We stepped in at an early stage, when our client first received a performance analysis that didn’t reflect her contributions or capabilities. Working quickly, we:

    • Conducted a detailed review of her appraisal and internal communications;
    • Supported her in submitting a formal grievance;
    • Ensured the internal process was followed fairly and lawfully;
    • Advised her throughout ongoing discussions with HR and senior leadership.

    As the matter progressed, it became clear that settlement discussions were necessary to preserve our client’s dignity and secure just compensation. We are currently negotiating a settlement package that reflects not only the damage caused but also the value of her contributions over more than a decade of service.

    Why It Matters

    Discrimination in the workplace is unlawful under the Equality Act 2010, yet it often manifests in covert forms—disguised as “performance issues,” “personality clashes,” or “organisational changes.” These pretexts cannot override an employee’s statutory right to fair and equal treatment. The law is unequivocal: no individual should be subjected to detriment, exclusion, or disadvantage – employers have a legal duty to ensure a working environment free from discrimination, bias, and retaliation.

    Our team at Sterling Law was there for our client every step of the way. From the first consultation to navigating the grievance process and now through settlement negotiations, we remain committed to ensuring your voice is heard and your rights are protected.

    If your employment has affected your well-being, professional reputation, or future prospects, don’t suffer in silence. We’re here to help.
