UK Government to Transition to eVisas by End of 2024

    08.08.2024

The UK Government is set to phase out all physical immigration documents by the end of 2024, transitioning to eVisas. These digital permissions, linked to the holder’s passport, will allow individuals to access an online portal to prove their UK immigration status when necessary, such as for employment verification.

    What is an eVISA?

An eVisa functions as an online record of an individual’s UK immigration status, including any applicable conditions, and is linked to their passport. This status can be viewed through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) View and Prove Service. By 31 December 2024, eVisas will replace physical documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs). Those with immigration permission expiring after this date must register for a UKVI account to access their eVisa. It is important to note that this change remains unaffected by recent UK elections.

eVisa Rollout Begins for EEA Nationals and Select Categories:

The rollout of eVisas has already begun for European Economic Area nationals under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as for some non-visa nationals in certain immigration categories. By the end of 2024, eVisas will be extended to all nationalities and immigration categories, aligning with the expiration of all BRPs on 31 December 2024. The UK Government has commenced this process by emailing BRP holders with instructions for UKVI account registration, with a full rollout expected by summer 2024. Those with BRPs expiring before 31 December 2024 do not need to apply for an eVisa immediately but must apply to extend their permission when due.

Steps to Register for an eVisa:

    • Check Eligibility: Ensure your immigration permission expires after 31 December 2024.
    • Receive Email Invitation: Look out for an email from the UK Government with instructions on how to register.
    • Register for a UKVI Account: Follow the instructions provided in the email to create a UKVI account.
    • Link Your Passport: Ensure your passport details are accurately linked to your UKVI account.
    • Generate a Share Code: Use your UKVI account to generate a share code when you need to prove your immigration status.
    • Update Information: Promptly update your UKVI account with any changes to your passport or contact details.
    • Travel Preparation: For international travel before 31 December 2024, carry your BRP; after this date, ensure your passport is sufficient for verification.

These steps will ensure a smooth transition from physical documents to the digital eVisa system, facilitating easier verification of immigration status for various purposes.

How to Prove Immigration Status with eVisas in the UK:

Within the UK, eVisa holders can prove their immigration status by generating a share code via their UKVI account and providing it along with their date of birth to employers or landlords. Any updates to passport or contact details must be promptly reflected in the UKVI account.

Individuals who have previously used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check mobile App’ for immigration applications already have a UKVI account. Those unsure of their account status can verify it using the View or Prove Your Immigration Status service or refer to their immigration permission confirmation email. Additional information on eVisas can be found on the UK Government’s eVisa site.
