UK Government Launches Visa Fee Reimbursement Scheme and Fast-Track Sponsor Licences for Scale-Ups

The UK government has announced two landmark measures designed to support high-growth businesses in attracting and retaining world-class international talent. Announced by Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle and Chancellor Rachel Reeves during London Tech Week on 9 June 2026, the initiatives represent a significant shift in the government’s approach to immigration policy for scaling businesses.

    Key takeaways

    • The UK government has launched a visa fee reimbursement scheme that lets eligible scale-ups reclaim the cost of sponsoring overseas workers, announced by Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle and Chancellor Rachel Reeves at London Tech Week on 9 June 2026.
    • Qualifying businesses can reclaim up to £5,000 per employee, capped at £25,000 per year, covering visa costs of between £819 and £1,865 per worker.
    • The scheme is open to UK scale-ups in digital and technology, life sciences, and clean energy.
    • A bespoke concierge service and an Office for Investment fast-track referral for a UK Expansion Worker sponsor licence accompany the scheme.
    • The pilot opens on 16 June 2026 and closes to applications on 5 July 2026, an application window of under three weeks.

At Sterling Law, we are closely monitoring these developments and are ready to advise eligible businesses on how to take full advantage of the schemes now available.

One of the most significant announcements is the introduction of a visa fee reimbursement scheme for scale-ups. Qualifying firms will be able to claim a maximum of £5,000 per employee, with an annual cap of £25,000, reclaiming visa costs that can range from £819 to £1,865 per worker.

The scheme is available to scale-ups operating in the following qualifying sectors:

    • Digital and Technology
    • Life Sciences
    • Clean Energy

This measure directly addresses one of the most significant financial barriers facing scaling businesses, the substantial cost of sponsoring overseas talent, and sends a clear signal that the UK is actively competing on the global stage to attract the best international professionals.

Alongside the reimbursement scheme, the government is launching a concierge service that will be bespoke to each high-growth company, tackling challenges such as regulation, access to finance and procurement. The service will act as a dedicated one-stop shop to help companies overcome barriers to growth, developed in close partnership with entrepreneurs and investors.

The government has appointed Penny Verbe as Scale-Up Adviser to ensure that policies are shaped by the real-world needs of scaling businesses.

The government will also launch an Office for Investment fast-track referral for a UK Expansion Worker sponsor licence, helping high-potential international businesses set up in the UK more quickly. This is particularly significant for overseas businesses looking to establish a presence in the UK and bring key personnel with them.

These schemes are time-sensitive. The application window is less than three weeks. Businesses that wish to participate in the pilot must ensure they are prepared to apply promptly from the opening date.

    Milestone Date

Pilot Scheme Opens 16 June 2026

If your business operates in digital and technology, life sciences or clean energy and is at a scaling stage, these schemes may significantly reduce the financial burden of international recruitment and streamline your ability to bring the talent you need into the UK.

The pilot window is narrow. Early engagement with specialist immigration advisers is essential to assess eligibility, ensure the necessary sponsor licence and compliance infrastructure is in place, and submit a well-prepared application before the 5 July 2026 deadline.

At Sterling Law, we advise scale-ups, high-growth businesses and their sponsored workers across the full spectrum of UK immigration law, from sponsor licence applications and compliance audits through to individual Skilled Worker and Global Talent visa matters.

We are well placed to assess your eligibility for these new schemes and to guide you through the application process efficiently and effectively.
