The UK Standard Visitor visa allows individuals to come to the UK to engage in a wide range of permitted activities. Visitor visa is granted for a period of 6 months to 10 years.
Permitted Activities under the UK Standard Visitor visa.
As a Standard Visitor, an individual can visit the UK for tourism, certain business activities, a short course of study, medical reasons, or to take part in research or an exchange program as an academic.
General Eligibility Criteria for the UK Standard Visitor visa.
The applicant must show that they:
will leave at the end of their visit
will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits
are able to pay for their return or onward journey
have proof of any business or other activities they want to do in the UK.
Students
If the applicant is applying to study for up to 6 months, they must prove one of the following:
they have been accepted onto a course of no more than 6 months provided by an accredited UK institution
They are at least 16 years old and have been accepted by UK higher education institution to take part in research that is relevant to the course they are studying
They are at least 16 years old and are doing an optional additional placement as part of an overseas medicine-related course.
Academics.
Academics can stay in the UK for 12 months. They must show that they are highly qualified in their field of expertise, currently working in that field of expertise at an academic institution overseas, visiting for a formal exchange or to carry out research and not filling a permanent teaching post. Academics can stay in the UK for up to 12 months.
Medical Treatment.
The applicant coming for private medical treatment must show that they have a medical condition that needs private treatment in the UK, make arrangements for a consultation or treatment, and have enough money to carry out the treatment. They also must not be a danger to public health and leave the UK once the treatment is completed, or when their visa expires. If the applicant is coming for medical treatment, they can stay in the UK for up to 11 months.
Advantages of the UK Standard Visitor visa.
Successful applicants can visit the UK to take a holiday, take part in an exchange program and spend time with friends and family. They can also do a recreational course of up to 30 days or volunteer for up to 30 days.
Restrictions.
The holders of this visa cannot access public funds, do paid or unpaid work, study a course that lasts for more than 6 months, marry or register a civil partnership.
How to Apply for the UK Standard Visitor visa and Fees.
The application must be submitted online. The earliest the individuals may apply is 3 months before travel. The decision is usually made within 3 weeks.
