Parent of A Child Student Visa

Moving to another country to seek better opportunities or for a better standard of living can be challenging. This is especially true when it comes to families and their children’s education. As such, many parents often decide to send their children abroad to study. However, this can create a dilemma when it comes to the parents themselves.

For families with children who want to study in British schools, there is a need to address the issue of their stay in the country. In this context, the Parent of a Child Student visa, designed for parents whose children have come to study, in the country plays an important role. This visa enables one of the parents to live in the country with the child for the duration of the child’s studies. In this article, we will look at the key aspects and requirements involved in obtaining this type of visa, discuss the main steps and possible difficulties of the application process.

Who Can Apply for a Parent of a Child Student Visa?

This permit is a special visa category (also referred to as the Parent of a Tier 4 Child visa) designed specifically for parents of children enrolled in UK private educational institutions under a Student visa. This visa is primarily available to parents with children who are 11 years old or younger and are already in the UK when the application is made. The principal aim of this visa is to offer assistance to young children who are not capable of living independently due to their age.

Parent of a Child Student Visa Requirements

To obtain this visa, the applicant must comply with certain criteria. Firstly, the child must be studying in the UK at an independent school. This means that the school must not be funded by the state. Secondly, the child must be under 12 years of age. It is necessary to confirm your parental affiliation with a child studying in the UK. Lastly, the parent must be over 18 years old and be able provide parental support fully while in the UK.

    Financial Requirements

To demonstrate financial stability, the applicant is required to show that they possess sufficient funds to support themselves and their child during their visit. This can be proven through bank statements that reflect an adequate balance or consistent income sources. For each month of the stay, an amount of £1,560 is necessary (for a period of 9 months). For instance, for a stay of 9 months, proof of access to £14,040is required. Additionally, if you plan to bring another child, there will be an extra cost of £625 each month, and it’s important to ensure this second child holds a student visa as well.

Parent of a Child Student Visa Fees

The basic cost of applying for this visa is £637. This amount is compulsory and is non-refundable in the event of a refusal.

The mandatory health fee is £1,035 per year. This Immigration Health Surcharge allows applicants to use the National Health Service in the same way as permanent residents of the UK for the duration of their visa. This fee is payable at the time of filing the visa application.

    How Long Can You Stay?

The holder of this type of visa can stay in the UK for 12 months. The visa can be extended provided that the child’s studies continue and they still require the presence and support of the parent and are under the age of 12.

    Conditions of Stay

Parent of a Child at School visa holders may reside in the UK for the duration of their child’s education, up to a maximum of 12 years of age. During this time you can look after your child and have the right to move freely around the country. One of the key restrictions of this visa is the prohibition to work or any other income-generating UK-based activity. However, it is permissible to engage in certain types of voluntary work that do not lead to income generation. Holders of this visa are not entitled to access UK public funds. This means that you cannot receive state benefits, social assistance, housing benefit and other forms of support. Holders of this visa cannot invite other family members into the country on the basis of their visa. The only exception would be if the other children also hold UK student visas.
