What is a UK Global Talent Visa (Tech Nation) and what benefits does it offer?

The UK Global Talent Visa (digital technology route) allows talented and promising technology professionals from anywhere in the world to live and work in the United Kingdom. To qualify, you must first secure an endorsement from Tech Nation, the body designated by the Home Office to assess applicants in the digital technology field, unless you hold a qualifying prestigious prize.

The route covers a broad range of technology specialisms, including software engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, FinTech, DeepTech, data science and product management. It is designed for both technical and business talent working in product-led digital technology companies.

The visa offers unusual flexibility. You do not need a job offer or a sponsoring employer, you can change jobs, work for more than one employer, be self-employed or found your own company, all without notifying the Home Office. You can bring your partner and children as dependants, and you can travel in and out of the UK freely during the visa’s validity. You may extend the visa, and it leads to settlement: Indefinite Leave to Remain is available after 3 years if you were endorsed under Exceptional Talent, or after 5 years under Exceptional Promise.

Who can get a Global Talent Visa in the tech sector?

You can apply if you work in digital technology and can show that you are either a recognised leader in your field (Exceptional Talent) or that you have the potential to become one (Exceptional Promise). Applicants fall into two broad groups:

    • Technical applicants, such as software developers, engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, AI and machine-learning experts, and DevOps or infrastructure specialists.
    • Business applicants, such as founders and senior executives with commercial, investment or product expertise inside a product-led digital technology company.

There is no fixed minimum number of years’ experience, but the category you apply under is closely linked to your career stage (see the criteria below). Roles that are generally not suitable for endorsement include consultancy and outsourcing, corporate IT service delivery, and junior positions.

Suitability criteria for the Global Talent Visa in digital technology

To be endorsed by Tech Nation you must meet one mandatory criterion and at least two of four optional criteria.

The mandatory criterion is that you have been recognised as a leading talent in the digital technology sector (Exceptional Talent), or have shown the potential to become a leading talent (Exceptional Promise), within the last five years.

You must then satisfy at least two of the following four optional criteria:

    • A proven track record of innovation as a founder or senior member of a product-led digital technology company, or in a new digital field or concept.
    • Proof that you are recognised for work beyond your day-to-day occupation that has contributed to the advancement of the sector.
    • Significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the digital technology sector as a founder, senior executive, board member or employee.
    • Exceptional ability demonstrated through academic contributions, evidenced by published research endorsed by an expert.

    Exceptional Talent

This category is for established professionals who are already recognised leaders in digital technology. Applicants are typically further into their careers (often more than five years’ experience) and can evidence their standing through significant achievements such as awards, high-profile speaking engagements, influential publications or major open-source contributions. Those endorsed under Exceptional Talent can apply for settlement after three years.

    Exceptional Promise

This category is for people earlier in their careers (usually five years’ experience or fewer) who show clear potential to become leaders in the field. Evidence often includes a strong academic record, notable project contributions, demonstrable leadership potential and recommendations from senior figures in the industry. Those endorsed under Exceptional Promise can apply for settlement after five years.

What is the process of applying?

The application has three stages: endorsement, the visa application, and the decision.

    Stage

    What happens

    Who decides
    1. Endorsement Complete the “Global Talent – stage 1” endorsement form on GOV.UK and upload your evidence. Since 4 August 2025 this is a single form; the old separate Tech Nation website step no longer exists. Tech Nation
    2. Visa application Once endorsed, apply for the visa online, pay the fee and the healthcare surcharge, and provide biometrics at a visa application centre. Home Office
    3. Decision The Home Office confirms whether your visa has been granted. Home Office

A successful endorsement is valid for three months, within which you must submit your visa application.

Recent changes to the Tech Nation route

Tech Nation remains the endorsing body for the digital technology route, but the way you apply changed on 4 August 2025. Previously, applicants had to complete two forms: a “stage 1” form on GOV.UK and a separate application on the Tech Nation website. Both were required, and applications missing either form were rejected.

From 4 August 2025, the TechNation website form was removed and its content folded into an expanded “Global Talent – stage 1” form on GOV.UK. Applicants now complete a single form, which the Home Office passes to Tech Nation for assessment. The endorsement criteria themselves have not changed. Earlier speculation that Tech Nation would close, or that the digital technology route would disappear, has not come to pass: Tech Nation continues to assess applications under a renewed Home Office contract.

What documents must be provided to apply for the Global Talent Visa (Tech Nation)?

You should prepare the following before you apply:

    • A valid passport, plus your current visa or residence permit if you are already in the UK.
    • Your Tech Nation endorsement letter (for stage 2).
    • Evidence of your achievements: awards, qualifications, certifications, publications and press coverage.
    • A detailed CV setting out your experience and contributions.
    • Three letters of recommendation from established experts or senior figures in the sector.
    • Evidence supporting the optional criteria you rely on, such as proof of innovation, technical contributions or academic research.

Documents not in English must be provided with a certified translation. Depending on your country of residence, you may also need a tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic.

How long does it take to process the Global Talent Visa (Tech Nation)?

Endorsement decisions from Tech Nation usually take 5 to 8 weeks. Once you have your endorsement and apply for the visa, the Home Office usually decides within 3 weeks if you apply from outside the UK, or 8 weeks if you apply from inside the UK.

Where a priority or super-priority service is available, it can speed up the visa decision for an additional Home Office fee. These premium services only accelerate processing; they do not affect whether the application succeeds.

UK Global Talent Visa (Tech Nation) fees

The government fees for the digital technology route are set out below.

    Fee Amount
    Endorsement application (stage 1) £561
Visa application (stage 2, after endorsement) £205
Total government fee (endorsement route) £766
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) £1,035 per year, per adult
Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), child under 18 £776 per year, per child
Each dependant (partner or child) £766 visa fee, plus the IHS

If you qualify through an eligible prize, you skip the endorsement stage and pay £766 at the visa application stage. Priority and super-priority services, where offered, carry an additional Home Office fee.
